WILLIMANTIC, Conn. -- After dropping a two-point decision in Set 1, the University of New England claimed the ensuing three frames by a total of seven points, resulting in a 3-1 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University in a non-conference women's volleyball contest played Saturday afternoon (Oct. 6) at Geissler Gymnasium. The set scores were 23-25, 26-24, 25-23, and 25-20.
The Nor'easters improve to 10-5 on the season with the win -- their second straight over ECSU following setbacks in the previous four. The Warriors now sit at 8-11 on the year.
The hosts raced out to a 10-2 lead in the opening stanza, but had to hold on late in order to take the set. A pair of attack errors by UNE allowed ECSU secure the point.
Big Blue found itself trailing again early on in both the 2nd and 3rd (5-1), but managed to rebound to move within one set of the match. In the 2nd, UNE took its first lead at 21-20 on a kill by senior
Paige Curran (Chelmsford, Mass.). Moments later, junior
Angie Brunette (North Andover, Mass.) secured the set to even things up with a kill and solo block on the last two points.
Tied at 18-all in the 4th, the Nor'easters closed with a deciding 7-2 run to finish off the match.
Curran finished with 17 kills, while sophomore
Leah Janelle (Madbury, N.H.) contributed 14 kills and 23 digs. Brunette ended with eight winners and three blocks.
Junior
Maria Kuehl (Middleton, N.H.) was key on both sides of the play, recording 38 assists to help guide the attack, while picking up 27 digs on the defensive end. Classmate
Kirsta Adie (Tyngsboro, Mass.) also had 27 digs for UNE.
The Nor'easters are slated to host Curry College for a conference match on Wednesday (7 p.m.).
