Marshall's two goals get Nor'easters past Curry

Box Score

MILTON, Mass. -- Junior tri-captain Katy Marshall (Eliot, Maine) scored a goal in each half to lead the University of New England women's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout of Curry College in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match played Wednesday (Oct. 3) afternoon at Walter M. Katz Field.

The win was the sixth consecutive over Curry for the Nor'easters, who snapped a four-game losing skid to improve to 4-8 on the season (2-2 CCC). Curry is now at the .500 mark overall (5-5-1, 1-3 CCC).

Marshall gave Big Blue the only offense it would need for victory, notching an unassisted goal in the 31st minute. She dribbled around a few Curry defenders, then lifted a shot into the upper right-hand corner of the net for her first marker of the season.

She would later add an insurance goal for UNE. Off a Big Blue set piece, Marshall collected a rebound of the blocked initial attempt and directed the ball into the goal with just over 10 minutes remaining.

The stat sheet was fairly balanced for the contest, with Curry holding slight advantages in shots (24-19) and corner kicks (4-0).

UNE junior goalkeeper Samantha Guyette (Newport, Vt.) came up with a career-best 12 saves for her first collegiate shutout. Her counterpart, Curry senior Samantha Hardy (Pepperell, Mass.), registered 10 stops.

The Nor'easters return to the pitch Saturday (Oct. 6) when they play host to Salve Regina University  at 1 p.m.
