Nor'easters, Lions play finale to 1-1 draw

Box Score

QUINCY, Mass. -- The University of New England and Eastern Nazarene College battled for 110 minutes only to end in a 1-1 double overtime tie in women's soccer action on Tuesday (Oct. 23), as the teams wrapped up the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) regular-season at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

With the result, the Lions (8-7-3, 5-2-2 CCC) secure the No. 4 seed for the upcoming CCC Championship, while the Nor'easters (7-10-1, 5-3-1) land in the No. 5 spot. The two squads will now meet again on Saturday (Oct. 27) in the opening round of the tournament -- site and game time will be announced late Wednesday by the conference with the official release of the postseason field.

After a scoreless first period, UNE wasted little time coming out of halftime to gain the advantage. Junior Morgan Humphreys (Rocky Hill, Conn.) sent in a pass to classmate Alexis Wells (Franconia, N.H.) at the top of the box, who put a shot off the framework, allowing first-year Kristin Dechene (Nashua, N.H.) to clean up the loose ball with just 2:17 gone in the second stanza.

The margin held for less than four minutes, however, as Amelia Gonzales headed in a corner kick service from Tina Corey to pull the Lions even at 1-1.

Each side had chances over what was left of regulation, but neither team could move in front. Following a fairly even first overtime session, the Nor'easter controlled play in the final 10 minutes and took all four shots in the period, but were unable to get anything by ENC goalie Kristen Farley.

Farley ended with five stops for the hosts, while junior Samantha Guyette (Newport, Vt.) closed with four saves for UNE.
