QUINCY, Mass. -- Scott Hansen scored in the 26th minute as Eastern Nazarene College secured a 1-0 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's soccer victory over the University of New England Tuesday night (Oct. 23) at Veterans Memorial Stadium, bringing an end to regular-season play in the conference.
The Lions (7-8-2, 3-5-1 CCC) locked up berth in the postseason tournament with the win, and, as the No. 7 seed, will head to second-seeded Salve Regina University for a quarterfinal-round match on Saturday. The official pairings will be released by the conference later on Wednesday.
UNE concludes its season at 6-10-1 overall, 2-6-1 in league contests.
Eastern Nazarene moved in front when Edgar Arceo forced a turnover just inside midfield began to push forward before letting a shot go from 35 yards out. Though the UNE keeper managed to keep the long-distance try out of the goal, Hansen quickly found the rebound on the doorstep and drove in his team-leading sixth tally of the season.
The Lions' defense then held strong in the second stanza and prevented the Nor'easters from netting an equalizer.
For the match, the hosts finished with a 14-10 edge in shots attempts, while Big Blue settled on a 6-2 cushion in corner kicks.
