Box Score

KEENE, N.H. -- After dropping the first set, 25-16, the University of New England women's volleyball team took three of the next four to defeat Keene State College by a score of 3-2 on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 20) at Spaulding Gymnasium.

Sets two and three of the non-conference match went for UNE (25-23 and 25-22) before the Owls claimed the fourth (25-21) to even things up. The Nor'easters finished off a 15-13 decision in the final frame.

Big Blue (14-8 overall) rebounded from another five-set battle earlier in the day to split the season series with the Owls (15-13), who had also endured a five-set match with UMass Dartmouth to open the tri-match.

With Keene State up by a set and 19-14 in the 2nd, the Nor'easters rattled off an 8-2 run to assume a 22-21 advantage. Though the next two points went for the Owls, UNE secured the last three to tie the match at a set apiece.

The 3rd set was UNE's from start-to-finish (minus one tie at 19-19), but the Keene State took the 4th despite facing deficits of 8-3 and 20-17 along the way.

Down 5-2 early in the fifth set, UNE registered seven of the next 10 points to grab a 9-8 edge, and would not trail again.

Junior Angie Brunette (North Andover, Mass.) and senior Paige Curran (Chelmsford, Mass.) each notched 15 kills to lead Big Blue. Junior Maria Kuehl (Middleton, N.H.) had 40 assists and 13 digs to help on both sides of the ball, while senior Jackie Stone (Saginaw, Mich.), sophomore Leah Janelle (Madbury, N.H.), and junior Kirsta Adie (Tyngsboro, Mass.) were also strong defensively. The trio tallied 17, 14, and 12 digs, respectively.

For the Owls, Angela Silveri finished with 13 kills and Kaylee Deluga had 11, while Haley Willumsen and Alexis Michal combined for 43 assists. Together, Sammy Dormio and Kaitlun Boyer had 31 digs.

Both blocking units were out in full force, as each squad ended with 13 total blocks.

UNE returns to the court on Monday (6 p.m.) at Saint Joseph's College (Maine).
