BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Junior tri-captain
Katy Marshall (Eliot, Maine) scored late in the first half to give the University of New England Nor'easters a 1-0 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a Commonwealth Coast Conference women's soccer match played Wednesday (Oct. 17) afternoon at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
The win was the fourth in the last five outings for the Nor'easters, who now stand at 7-9 overall and 5-2 in conference play. Wentworth drops to 5-10-1, 3-4 in CCC action.
In the closing stages of the first frame, junior
Ellie Arsenault (Saco, Maine) slid a pass to Marshall, who launched a high shot from 30 yards out that found its way under the cross bar to give Big Blue a 1-0 advantage at the 37:36 mark.
UNE junior keeper
Samantha Guyette (Newport, Vt.) would come up with a big save less than two minutes later, diving to her right to deny a low attempt by Wentworth junior Ashley Cook (San Diego, Calif.).
The Leopards also had a chance to knot the match in the closing minutes of regulation, but a shot from just outside of the 18 by senior Molly Newcomb (Marshfield, Mass.) slid just right of the goal.
Guyette finished with three saves to register her fourth shutout in her last five starts for the Nor'easters, who outshot Wentworth by a 16-9 margin.
Senior co-captain Jess Gardner (Wilbraham, Mass.) had six stops for Wentworth, which hosts Nichols College at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 20).
The Nor'easters will look to improve their seeding for the upcoming CCC Championship when they travel to defending league champion Roger Williams University on Saturday (Oct. 20). That match is scheduled to kick-off at 1 p.m.
