Box Score
BRISTOL, R.I. -- Alexandria Lanieri scored four straight points late for Roger Williams University to turn a three-point deficit into a lead the Hawks would not relinquish, as RWU held off the University of New England women's basketball team, 62-60, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Saturday afternoon at the Campus Rec. Center.
Lanieri finished with a team-high 20 points for the Hawks (5-5, 2-1 CCC), to go with eight rebounds and three blocks. Hannah Pirez added 14 points, and Kaitlyn Bovee had nine. Lisa Lutz picked up five steals.
UNE senior
Kelley Paradis (Newport, Maine) also dropped in 20 points to pace the Nor'easters (7-3, 2-1 CCC), and ended with a stat-line that included six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Classmate
Margo Russell (Madison, Maine) chipped in with 15 points and eight boards, while junior
Beth Suggs (Bath, Maine) contributed 10 points, six rebounds, and three steals.
RWU led by 10 (49-39) with over 13 minutes to go, before an 11-0 run over a span of 4:20 gave the visitors a 50-49 edge.
No advantage was greater than three points the rest of the way, as the lead changed hands five times down the stretch.
After Lanieri's string of points and two from Perez to make it 61-58 with 46 seconds left, two free throws by Paradis at the 0:21 mark sliced the margin to one. Misses both ways and the first of two freebies for the Hawks left 1.7 seconds on the board when the defensive rebound was controlled. UNE's three-point attempt at the buzzer would not go down.
Roger Williams heads to Curry College and the Nor'easters entertain Gordon College in each squad's next outing -- both on Tuesday.
