Lauren Blaisdell's second game-winner of the season knocked off the reigning CCC champ
Box Score
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Junior
Lauren Blaisdell (Scarborough, Maine) scored the only goal of the match with 1:13 remaining to give the University of New England a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Roger Williams University in a Commonwealth Coast Conference women's soccer match Saturday afternoon at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
With the win, the Nor'easters improve to 6-1-1 and remain perfect in conference play at 3-0. The loss ends a 21-game unbeaten streak against CCC opponents and 17-game regular-season winning streak against league foes for the Hawks (4-4-1, 2-1 CCC), who were last year's CCC champions and defeated UNE in overtime, 2-1, in the 2010 semifinal round.
It was the second win for Big Blue against RWU in the last seven meetings between the teams -- the previous occasion coming just before the Hawks' respective runs began in 2009.
Blaisdell flicked a pass from senior
Katie Caron (Winslow, Maine) around a defender and under the goalkeeper into the net for her second-game winning tally of the season and third goal overall.
The game was tight throughout, with both teams limiting one another's chances thanks to strong defense. Each team finished with 12 shots, although few translated into quality scoring attempts. With the game still scoreless and just under 18 minutes to play, UNE senior
Sarah Richardson (Rochester, N.H.) had the best opportunity to that point, but her offering struck the left post and rattled out.
Senior goalkeeper
Jess Woodworth (Concord, N.H.) needed five saves for her fourth shutout of the year. Sophomore Stephanie Jaques (Burlington, Vt.) managed a pair of stops for the Hawks, who host Bridgewater State University under the lights on Thursday (7 p.m).
UNE heads to Gorham on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. match at the Universitiy of Southern Maine.
