Box Score
BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore
Ellie Arsenault (Saco, Maine) scored her first goal of the season with 14:24 remaining to snap a scoreless tie and give the University of New England women's soccer team a 1-0 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Saturday afternoon at Sweeney Field.
The opening minutes would prove to be a field position battle, with the majority of the action happening in the midfield area. The Nor'easters had their first shot attempt in the eighth minute and 1:09 later had a golden chance to take a 1-0 lead, however Leopard junior keeper Jess Gardner (Wilbraham, Mass.) made a diving stop of a header off off a corner kick service.
In the 75th minute UNE had two prime opportunities to break the ice when a shot was kicked away by a Leopard defender and the rebound saved by Gardner. However, at 75:36, the visitors got on the board when Arsenault dribbled through the box and drilled a shot into the left side of the net.
Senior
Jess Woodworth (Concord, N.H.) made three saves in recording her second shutout of the season for Big Blue. Gardner finished with 10 stops, as Wentworth was out-shot by a 23-7 margin.
With the win UNE improves to 5-1 (2-0 CCC), and is set to host Wellesley College on Wednesday (5:30 p.m.). Wentworth falls to 2-4 (0-2 CCC) and hosts Emmanuel College on Monday night.
