Katy Marshall headed in the game's first goal during the latter stages of the opening half
Box Score
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sophomore Emily Anderson (Grafton, Mass.) drove home a cross in the 62nd minute to break a 1-1 tie and lift Colby College to a 2-1 victory over the University of New England in a non-conference women's soccer match contested Wednesday evening at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
Classmate Grace Dickinson (Northfield, Ill.) sent in a pass from along the right endline to where Anderson took it out of mid-air with a firm right-footed strike. The Mules (2-0) tightened up their defense and allowed just one shot the rest of the way -- one that first-year goalie Emily Brook (Duxbury, Mass.) did well to handle, falling to her right.
After more than 30 minutes in the first period, UNE sophomore
Katy Marshall (Eliot, Maine) put the hosts on the board with a header into the upper left side. The play was initiated by junior
Nicole Faircloth (Westfield, Mass.), who took a free kick from 35 yards out on the right and curled it towards the back post.
Colby answered 1:43 later, as sophomore Annie Papadellis (Hopkinton, Mass.) put a touch on a loose ball in front and first-year Cami Notaro (Bethesda, Md.) stepped in and placed a shot into the lower left corner.
Brook finished with five solid saves for the Mules, who are slated to visit Middlebury College on Saturday (11 a.m.).
For the Nor'easters, who out-shot their opponents 11-5 in the opening frame and 14-11 for the game, senior goalie
Jess Woodworth (Concord, N.H.) also turned away five shots that came on target.
Big Blue (4-1) will look to get back in the win column on Saturday, as it will travel to Wentworth Institute of Technology for a 12 p.m. start.
