Roger Williams hands UNE first tournament setback

Box Score

BEVERLY, Mass. -- Fifth-seeded Roger Williams University scored four times in both the third and fourth innings to rally from a four-run deficit for an 8-5 victory over No. 4 University of New England in Game 3 of The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Softball Championship double elimination tournament played Tuesday afternoon at Endicott College.

The Hawks (19-22) advanced to play top-seeded Endicott College later in the afternoon (falling 16-2 in 5 innings), while the Nor'easters (25-16) resume playoff action on Thursday against Curry College (Game 7, 2:30 p.m. at Endicott). To view the tournament bracket, click HERE.

Trailing 4-0 heading into the top of the third, a lead-off walk followed by a double put two on for Hawks junior Hannah Pirez (Bolton, Mass.), who cleared the bases with a home run to center. One more in the inning knotted things up at 4-4.

Roger Williams had the bases loaded with two outs in the next frame, and took the lead on an infield single -- the first of two hits -- from junior Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y.). The Hawks plated another run on a passed ball, and sophomore Kelly Marcin (Windsor Locks, Conn.) drove in an additional two with a double down the right field line to make it 8-4.

UNE got one back in the sixth courtesy of a sacrifice fly to left from first-year Kirstyn Tracey (Pawcatuck, Conn.), which scored pinch-runner first-year Alison Stanley (Rochester, N.H.), but could not draw any closer.

Marcin went the distance for RWU, giving up six hits and two walks while striking out a pair. Junior Erica Castro (Medford, N.Y.) recorded a game-high three hits to help the offense, while senior Sarah Grill (Watervliet, N.Y.) and sophomore Lauren Tierney (Middleboro, Mass.) had two hits apiece.

The Nor'easters did most of their damage in the bottom of the first, beginning with an RBI single up the middle from junior Ashley Gott (Winterport, Maine). After a stolen base for Gott and the second out of the inning, sophomore Megan Gauger (South Paris, Maine) singled up the middle to send Gott around. The next batter was first-year Amanda Vaudreuil (Windham, N.H.), who ripped a two-run shot down the left field line.

Gauger and senior Stephanie Podolski (Coventry, Conn.) each had two hits for UNE. Junior Julie Bigelow (Montpelier, Vt.) went 3.2 innings to surrender just three earned runs, before classmate Erin Lyons (Salem, N.H.) came in to strike out four while giving up six hits the rest of the way.
