BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Bowdoin College first-year Melissa DellaTorre (Scarborough, Maine) and sophomore Tricia Thibodeau (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) combined to allow just nine hits and two walks on the day while striking out 17 as the Polar Bears defeated the University of New England by scores of 1-0 and 8-0 (6 innings) in non-conference softball action Monday afternoon at Pickard Field.

Winners of 14 in the last 16, Bowdoin improves to 20-15 on the year. The Nor'easters, who wrap up the regular season at home on Wednesday (3 p.m.) with a TCCC doubleheader against Roger Williams University, now sit with an overall record of 23-15.

The Polar Bears got all the scoring they would need in the second inning of game one, as first-year Tracy Shirey (Waterloo, Iowa) reached on an error with one out. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, and moving over to third on a groundout, Shirley came home on another wild pitch to put Bowdoin in front.

DellaTorre retired nine of ten batters from the fourth through sixth innings before UNE attempted to rally in the seventh. Senior Stephanie Podolski (Coventry, Conn.) opened the seventh with a pinch-hit double to left-center. First-year Amanda Vaudreuil (Windham, N.H.) followed with a single to left, and moved to second as the throw came to home plate. DellaTorre recorded the first out of the frame with an infield pop out, then fanned the next two batters to shut down the threat and earn the win.

For the game, DellaTorre notched 10 strike outs as she gave up six hits and no walks. Big Blue junior Julie Bigelow (Montpelier, Vt.) was tagged with the loss, allowing just four hits and zero earned runs. Classmate Ashley Gott (Winterport, Maine) had two hits for UNE, while sophomore Toni DaCampo (Woburn, Mass.) had two base hits, including a double, for the Polar Bears.

Already ahead 2-0 in game two, Bowdoin plated five runs in the fourth inning to take control. Sophomore Gen Barlow (Norwich, Conn.) delivered a two-run single in the stanza, and finished with two hits and two runs scored. Senior Molly Nestor (Duxbury, Mass.) had three hits in three at-bats for the Polar Bears, while first-year Casey Correa (Stamford, Conn.) added a pair of hits -- and together the duo accounted for four scores.

Thibodeau permitted three hits in the outing, including one to Gott, who extended her hitting streak to six games. UNE junior Erin Lyons (Salem, N.H.) took the loss, giving up two earned runs and six hits over 3.1 innings.

Like the Nor'easters, Bowdoin will return to action Wednesday (3:30 p.m.) with a home twinbill against Husson University.
