STANDISH, Maine -- The University of New England softball team needed eight innings to defeat Saint Joseph's College (Maine) in game one of Tuesday's non-conference doubleheader at Bailey Field by a score of 6-5, before the Monks rebounded to take the nightcap, 7-1.
The Nor'easters (23-11) are back in action Wednesday for two more non-conference games at Bowdoin College (3:30 p.m.). St. Joe's (23-7) resumes Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play Wednesday, with a pair of contests at Pine Manor College.
Junior
Ashley Gott (Winterport, Maine) had a hit in all four at-bats to lead the offense in the opener, and finished the day going 5-for-7 with two runs scored. Classmate
Maegen Johnson (Standish, Maine) and sophomore
Erin Grover (Biddeford, Maine) both recorded two hits in game one and added another in game two. First-year Allison Frazier (Tewksbury, Mass.) had one base hit in each outing.
UNE jumped out in front in game one, plating four runs in the top of the first. Johnson led off with a double down the left field line, moved to third on a ground out, and scored on a single by Gott. Big Blue had runners on first and second with two outs, when junior pitcher
Erin Lyons (Salem, N.H.) doubled in both runners to make it 3-0. Grover followed with a single to complete the scoring in the inning.
The Monks answered with two in the bottom of the frame to cut the margin in half. Senior Alyssa Dunn (Standish, Maine) knocked in runners from both corners on a two-out double.
After an sacrifice fly from Dunn in the third and another run in the fourth, St. Joe's pulled even with UNE at 4-4. Each team added one more in the fifth, and then came up empty in the last two innings of regulation to force extras.
Big Blue first-year
Amanda Vaudreuil (Windham, N.H.) singled home the go-ahead run in the eighth, and UNE successfully caught the lead runner in an attempted double-steal in the bottom of the inning to help secure the win.
For the Monks, four players combined to record 10 of the team's 13 hits. First-years Connie Grovo (Limington, Maine) and Lindsay Moore (Barrington, N.H.) each went 3-for-4, while Dunn and junior Emily Leverone (Hampton, N.H.) had two hits apiece.
In game two, St. Joe's led, 1-0, through three innings until UNE sophomore
Megan Gauger (South Paris, Maine) tied things up in the fourth with an RBI-single down the right field line. Gott scored from third on the play, after reaching earlier in the frame on a triple to right.
The Monks took the lead right back in the bottom of the inning, and added two in the fifth and three more in the sixth to provide the final tally.
Sophomore Kayla Vannah (Waldoboro, Maine) put forth a solid effort in the nightcap, limiting the Nor'easters to five hits and no walks to earn the win. Leverone paced the St. Joe's offense with three hits and three RBI in the game, and Grovo posted a pair of base hits.
UNE junior
Julie Bigelow (Montpelier, Vt.) took the loss, striking out two in six innings of work.
