Bobcats tally first seven goals in 10-4 win over UNE

LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College scored six times in the opening period and went on to pick up a 10-4 non-conference men's lacrosse victory over the University of New England in a contest played Tuesday afternoon at Garcelon Field.

Sophomore Dan Hines (Manchester, Mass.) led the Bobcats (2-1) with a pair of goals and an assist. Classmate Rob Highland (Yarmouth, Maine) added two scores, and first-year Thomas Livingston (Concord, Mass.) notched a goal and an assist.

In goal for Bates, junior Adam Scharff (Glyndon, Md.) made eight saves. His counterpart, UNE junior Nate Porter (Cohasset, Mass.), also recorded eight stops.

Trailing 8-2 after two periods, the Nor'easters (1-1) shutout the hosts in the third frame and pulled within four courtesy of two goals by first-year midfielder Dan O'Gorman (Putnam Valley, N.Y.). The visitors would not get any closer.

The Bobcats finished with a 36-23 margin in shots, and a 12-6 edge in face-off wins.

Bates visits Middelbury College for its New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) opener on Saturday. UNE is set to host the University of Southern Maine on Thursday (4 p.m.) at the Big Blue Turf.
