Huge second period carries UNE past Husson in opener

PORTLAND, Maine -- The University of New England men's lacrosse team scored six times in the second frame to blow open at two-goal match on its way to a 15-4 non-conference victory over Husson University in the mutual season-opener for both teams played Sunday afternoon at Memorial Field on the campus of Deering High School.

Five different players found their way into the scoring column during the period, as the Nor'easters (1-0) increased a 4-2 lead after the first stanza to 10-2 at the halftime break.

Senior Luke DiFiore (Gloucester, Mass.) led the way with three goals and three assists. Junior Dylan Thomas (Mount Pleasant, N.Y.) also scored three times, while younger brother Tyler Thomas (Mount Pleasant, N.Y.) added a pair of scores to go with three helpers. UNE also received two goals from junior Michael Pennacchio (Peabody, Mass.).

Big Blue first-year Dan O'Gorman (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) controlled the midfield, winning seven of eight face-offs and picking up a match-best 10 ground balls, in addition to recording two goals and an assist. As a team, the Nor'easters held sizeable advantages in face-off wins (15-5) and ground balls (60-37).

The Eagles (0-1) got a pair of goals from sophomore Mitch Heaps (Felton, Pa.), and junior goalie John Hooper (Wakefield, R.I.) posted 18 saves in just over 55 minutes of action.

For UNE, junior Nate Porter (Cohasset, Mass.) only needed to make four stops over the initial three quarters to earn the win, before sophomore Jay Letendre (Southington, Conn.) and first-year Jeremy Diaz (Brunswick, Maine) finished up over the final 15 minutes.

The Nor'easters are slated to host Bates College in their next contest on Tuesday (5 p.m.). Husson is off until Saturday (March 12) when it will face the University of Southern Maine.
