BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England received solid pitching performances from junior Erin Lyons (Salem, N.H.) and senior Amber Zablowsky (Rochester, Mass.) to keep the University of Southern Maine off the scoreboard in a 5-0, 2-0 sweep of a non-conference softball doubleheader played Tuesday afternoon at Claude Dubois Field.

The wins increase the Nor'easters' unbeaten streak to nine games, and move UNE to 11-5 on the season.

Leading 1-0 after two innings in the opener, Big Blue plated three in the top of the third to gain some separation. Junior Maegen Johnson (Standish, Maine) led off with a bunt single, and scored on the next play as classmate Ashley Gott (Winterport, Maine) laced a double to the center field fence. Gott and one more crossed the plate as UNE took advantage of a pair of USM errors to make it 4-0.

The four-run cushion was all Lyons needed to register the victory, as she held the Southern Maine offense without a hit through five innings before giving up one in each of the last two at-bats. On the day, Lyons fanned six and walked four to improve to 4-2 on the year.

Johnson, Gott, and sophomore Megan Gauger (South Paris, Maine) had two hits apiece for the Nor'easters, who added a run in the seventh to provide the final margin. First-year Amanda Vaudreuil (Windham, N.H.) had a hit for the eighth consecutive game with a third-inning single.

Game two saw UNE jump in front right from the start, as Gott reached on a two-out single to the left side of the infield. With the hit, the junior catcher extended her hit streak to 12 games. Sophomore Erin Grover (Biddeford, Maine) followed with a triple to the fence in right-center, and Big Blue led, 1-0.

Both Zablowsky and Huskies first-year pitcher Samantha Morse (South China, Maine) made quick work of the ensuing three full innings, as 18 straight batters were retired.

USM recorded three hits in the bottom of the fourth to put some pressure on the one-run deficit, but could not get a runner past second base.

Trailing 2-0 in their last trip to the plate, the Huskies got a lead-off double to left-center from sophomore Katie Davis (Woburn, Mass.). After an out, senior Melissa Caiazzo (Portland, Maine) advanced Davis to third with a single through the left side, but a line-out and a ground-out ended the Southern Maine threat.

Zablowsky struck out two and walked none while surrendering five hits as she upped her record to 4-2 on the season. Morse punched out six and gave up four hits in the losing effort.

Davis finished with two hits in the game, and sophomore Stefanie Stockwell (Buxton, Maine) notched a hit in each outing to end up with two on the day for USM (2-12).

The Nor'easters resume league play with a The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) twinbill at Regis College on Wednesday (4 p.m.). Southern Maine is back in action on Thursday with two contests at Husson University (3:30 p.m.).
