Smith, Gott help lead UNE in shutout of Trailblazers

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Sophomore Beth Smith (Delanson, N.Y.) and junior Ashley Gott (Winterport, Maine) combined for seven hits and five runs scored as the University of New England blanked Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, 7-0, in softball action from the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Thursday.

Smith recorded a hit in all four at-bats during the game and scored three times, as the Nor'easters improved to 3-5 on the year. Gott went 3-for-4 at the plate, adding two runs batted in and with two stolen bases to her totals.

Junior Julie Bigelow (Montpelier, Vt.) got the start and went six innings, giving up two hits while striking out four to even her record at 1-1.

Leading 2-0 after two innings, UNE took full control of the contest in the top of the third. Smith and Gott reached with singles, and moved up a base after a ground out. Sophomore Megan Gauger (South Paris, Maine) knocked in her second run of the game with a single, and classmate Erin Grover (Biddeford, Maine) followed with a double that scored Gott and Gauger. First-year Amanda Vaudreuil (Windham, N.H.) put Big Blue up 6-0 with a single that drove in Grover.

The Trailblazers (3-7) did manage to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but could not get on the board.
