Albright plates three in 5th for 3-2 win over Big Blue

Box Score

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Albright College scored all the runs it would need in the bottom of the fifth inning and held off the University of New England in the sixth and seventh for a 3-2 win Thursday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Softball Classic.

After two, one-out singles in the last half of the fifth, the Lions (5-6) took advantage some UNE miscues in the field to put three on the board.

The Nor'easters (2-5) bounced right back with one out in the top of the sixth, getting back-to-back doubles from sophomore Erin Grover (Biddeford, Maine) and junior Ashley Gott (Winterport, Maine) to make it 3-1. Junior Marie Mantelli (Thompson, Conn.) followed with a single to drive in another to close the gap to 3-2.

UNE threatened in its final at-bat, moving a runner to third with one out, but could not plate the tying score.

Gott and Mantelli each had two hits in the game. Senior pitcher Amber Zablowsky (Rochester, Mass.) was not charged with any earned runs while giving up five hits and a walk, and striking out three.

Albright junior Jaime Weckesser (Collegeville, Pa.) picked up the win for the Lions, surrendering six hits and a pair of walks on the day.
