Nor'easters drop season-opener to College of Wooster

Box Score

CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- Sophomore pitcher Jenn Horton (Worthington, Ohio) struck out seven and provided all the run support she would need with two-run homer in the first inning as The College of Wooster defeated the University of New England, 8-1, in softball action Sunday morning at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

The contest was the first of the 2011 season for both teams.

Junior Lauren Swinehart (Apple Creek, Ohio) and sophomore Erica Villa (Ashtabula, Ohio) each had multiple-hit games for the Fighting Scots, who scored at least a run in five of their six innings at-bat.

The Nor'easters got on the board in the top of the second, as sophomore Erin Grover (Biddeford, Maine) blasted the first pitch she saw over the fence, reducing the margin, at the time, to 2-1. Sophomore Casey Brigham (New London, Conn.) recorded a pair of hits for Big Blue.

On the mound, UNE senior Amber Zablowsky (Rochester, Mass.) gave up five earned runs while striking out two batters on the day.
