CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- First-year Arielle Doering (Branchburg, N.J.) pitched five innings of relief with 10 strikeouts and Amherst College scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out a 4-3 victory over the University of New England to wrap up the first day of play Sunday afternoon at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.
The Lord Jeffs (2-0) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, getting a two-out, two-run homer from first-year Carolyn Miller (Leominster, Mass.).
UNE responded with two in the second off Amherst sophomore Christina Anderson (Port St. Lucie, Fla.). First-year Alison Stanley (Rochester, N.Y.) and sophomore
Beth Smith (Delanson, N.Y.) each drove in runs during the frame.

Erin Grover (Biddeford, Maine) recorded one of her two hits in the top half of the third, plating a run to put the Nor'easters (0-2) ahead, 3-2.
The game went scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, where Amherst Theresa Kelly (Los Angeles, Calif.) led off with a double. After the Lord Jeffs put another runner on base, Anderson knocked in both with her second hit of the day to produce the final margin.
Doering pitched the final five innings to earn the win, surrendering one earned run while scattering four hits and three walks.
