Strong first half powers No. 10 Camels past Big Blue

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Sophomore Steven Eicher (Northport, N.Y.) scored three of his four goals in the opening half to help No. 10 Connecticut College establish a 6-0 lead en route to a 12-3 non-conference men's lacrosse victory over the University of New England Sunday afternoon at Silfen Field.

The Camels, who host Clarkson University on Wednesday, improve to 1-1 on the season. UNE (2-2) continues its road trip to Richard Stockton College the same day (1 p.m.).

Sophomore Mike Giambanco (Massapequa, N.Y.) added three scores for the hosts, who out-shot their opponents, 43-30. Senior Ryan Hayes (Darian, Conn.) tallied an assist on half (6) of his team's goals.

Conn. College midfielder Chuck Czerkawski (Cohasset, Mass.) controlled the midfield, winning 12-of-14 face-offs and picking up a game-best nine ground balls. Defending the cage, classmate John Lenehan (Hingham, Mass.) made eight stops in 50 minutes of action.

For the Nor'easters, sophomore Tyler Thomas (Mount Pleasant, N.Y.) notched a goal and two assists, setting up the other UNE goals by senior Luke DiFiore (Gloucester, Mass.) and first-year Dan O'Gorman (Putnam Valley, N.Y.).

Junior goalie Nate Porter (Cohasset, Mass.) recorded 14 saves for UNE.
