Box Score
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sophomore
Paul Kashmanian (Grand Island, N.Y.) tallied his second goal of the night less than three minutes into the third period for what would be the game-winner as the University of New England skated to a 6-4 victory over Franklin Pierce University in non-conference men's hockey action Tuesday evening at Biddeford Arena.
Leading 4-3 entering the final frame, Kashmanian connected with classmate
Brent Bourgeois (New Haven, Vt.) for his third marker of the season, giving the hosts a two-goal advantage.
Ravens sophomore center Roscoe Sweeney (Falmouth, Mass.) made things interesting late, netting an unassisted, power play goal with 1:31 to play to make the difference one (5-4). The score gave Sweeney a hat trick on the night.
UNE sophomore
Scott McManaman (Amherst, Nova Scotia) pocketed a short-handed, empty net goal 30 seconds later to seal the win.
First-year
Connor Brogan (Hershey, Pa.) made 19 saves for the Nor'easters, who improve to 4-16 on the season.
Kashmanian kicked off a first period that saw five goals scored, taking a feed from junior
Kyle MacLennan (New Glasgow, Nova Scotia) to put Big Blue in front 3:25 into the contest. Sweeney made sure the deficit didn't last long, drawing the visitors even on the scoreboard 28 seconds later. Midway through the period, Sweeney put Franklin Pierce up, 2-1.
UNE juniors
Mike Tiano (Dover, N.H.) and
Ted Fabian (Oakland, Maine) each added a goal before the stanza ended as the hosts took a 3-2 cushion into the first intermission.
Sophomore
Tyler Fleurent (Biddeford, Maine) made the Nor'easters' lead two (4-2) midway through the second period, before Ravens junior Bill Sullivan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) closed the gap to 4-3 with 20 minutes of action remaining.
FPU (5-17), which was out-shot 54-23, received 48 stops from first-year Dave O'Brien (Groton, Mass.). The Ravens next host Assumption College on Saturday (7 p.m.).
The Nor'easters resume ECAC East games this weekend with away matches against NESCAC opponents Tufts University (Friday, 7:15 p.m.) and Connecticut College (Saturday, 3 p.m.).
