BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Junior center Pat Flanagan (Somerville, Mass.) scored a team-high 12 points to pace Roger Williams University in a 64-47 win over the University of New England in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference men's basketball contest played Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center.
Sophomore Matt Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) threw in 10 points and handed out four assists for the Hawks (14-7, 6-3 TCCC), who connected on an impressive 57.1 percent (20 of 35) of their shots in the game. Seniors Corey Fava (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) and Taylor Petruccelli (Stratford, Conn.) contributed nine and eight points, respectively.
RWU finished with a 30-19 rebounding edge, led by senior Tom Rafael (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) with seven.
Additionally, the visitors posted 19 points (on 29 shots) at the free throw line to just six (of 11) for their opponents.
For UNE (3-18, 1-8 TCCC), first-year
Charles Fenner (Bronx, N.Y.) recorded a game-high 19 points and junior
Marcus Winn (Austin, Texas) added 14. Together they accounted for all but one of Big Blue's nine treys.
The Hawks led 10-0 after four minutes of action, and increased the margin to 17 (24-7) towards the end of the first half. Long-range shots from Winn and Fenner closed the gap to 24-13 at intermission.
Following a basket by Fenner to open the second period -- cutting the deficit to single digits -- RWU continued to show efficiency on the offensive end and had the cushion up to its highest point (59-33) with under six minutes remaining.
Fenner poured in 11 of his 16 second-half points down the stretch, but it was not enough.
Each squad returns to the floor Tuesday with 8 p.m. road matches. Roger Williams is at Anna Maria College, and UNE visits Endicott College.
