Colby-Sawyer holds off late UNE rally at KSC Classic

Box Score

KEENE, N.H. -- Colby-Sawyer College saw its 11-point lead with 12:39 left trimmed to one inside the final minute of play, but held on for a 72-69 win over the University of New England men's basketball team on the second day of action at the Keene State College Tip-Off Classic at Spaulding Gymnasium.

UNE trailed by four (67-63) with 3:30 to go after two free throws by first-year Jordan Ferreira (Nantucket, Mass.), and over a minute ran off the clock before classmate Timmy Mains (Auburn, Maine) got into the paint to lay one in and make it 67-65.

After an empty possession each way, an offensive rebound and put-back by Chargers senior Will Bardaglio (Wayne, Maine) pushed the lead back up to four, and the ensuing free throw made the difference five (70-65) with 63 seconds remaining.

Mains -- named to the all-Classic team -- came down the court and was fouled as he hit a jumper. Though the freebie didn't fall, junior Alex Alsadi (Scottsdale, Ariz.) corralled the board and went right back up to slice the deficit to one with 40 ticks left.

A turnover and then a missed three-pointer forced a foul situation on the rebounder, Koang Thok (Portland, Maine), and Thok made both tries with one second showing to produce the final margin.

Bardaglio led four Colby-Sawyer players in double figures with 14 points and grabbed a game-high eight caroms. Mike Dias and Zach Bean each totaled 11 points, while Thok contributed 10.

For the Nor'easters, Mains led all players with 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Three players -- seniors Ryan Knotek (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Jarryd Rossignol (Caribou, Maine), along with Ferreira -- all tallied 15 points in support. Alsadi had the remaining eight points, and shared the team-high with Ferreira for rebounds (7).

For the game, Big Blue shot 50.9 percent (28-for-55).

Things were tightly contested for the first 25 minutes, featuring five ties and seven lead-changes. A Rossignol trey just under six minutes into the match gave UNE its largest advantage (11-8) of the evening.

The Chargers were up by two (35-33) at the break, and surrendered the positive margin just once during the second period before gaining the lead for good and building a 53-42 cushion.

UNE is off until next Sunday (Nov. 27) when it travels to Mount Ida College.
