Nor'easters overcome early deficit in 3-1 win over WNE

Alice Read's fourth goal of the season broke a 1-1 tie and provided UNE with its ninth win

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior midfielder Alice Read (Auburn, Maine) scored the go-ahead goal early in the second half as the University of New England remained unbeaten in Commonwealth Coast Conference play with a 3-1 victory over Western New England in college women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

The win keeps the Nor'easters undefeated in their last seven games and improves their overall mark to 9-1-2, 5-0-1 in CCC play. The setback drops the Golden Bears to 2-9-2 (0-4-1 CCC).

Read's game winner came when she took a few touches in the right side of the box and drilled a high shot just inside the near post. First-years Margaret Palmer (Scarborough, Maine) and Marlie Mochamer (Farmington, Maine) were credited with assists on the play.

Western New England had opened the scoring in the fourth minute when senior Sara McMurray (Enfield, Conn.) drove a low shot that deflected off a player at the goal mouth and slipped just inside the left post give the visitors a 1-0 advantage. Senior Krista Gangloff (Newington, Conn.) set-up the score with a feed.

The Nor'easters drew even in the 10th minute on a header by sophomore Katy Marshall (Eliot, Maine) after junior Nicole Faircloth (Westfield, Mass.) inserted a corner kick from the left side.

After Reid's decisive blow just three minutes into the second frame, senior Sarah Richardson (Rochester, N.H.) tacked on an insurance goal late after a service from classmate Katie Caron (Winslow, Maine).

Senior netminder Jess Woodworth (Concord, N.H.) came away with the victory after turning aside seven Golden Bear shots on goal.

Sophomore Victoria Trezise (Islip, N.Y.) had seven saves, including one on a UNE penalty kick early in the contest.

The Nor'easters return to the pitch Tuesday evening when they play host to non-conference foe Bowdoin College at 6 p.m.

Western New England entertains Roger Williams University that afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
