BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sophomore
Angie Brunette (North Andover, Mass.) matched her season-high with 13 kills to pace the University of New England in a 3-0 win over Gordon College in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's volleyball match played Tuesday evening at the Campus Center. The set scores were 25-15, 25-22, and 25-15.
Big Blue (5-10) improves to 2-3 in conference contests with the win -- the fourth straight in meetings with Gordon. The Fighting Scots fall for the third consecutive outing, and now sit at 10-8 overall, 1-4 in CCC play.
The Nor'easters surged out to a 14-1 lead during the early moments of the opening set. UNE held a 14-point advantage (22-8) later on, before a 7-2 Gordon run cut the deficit into single digits. An attack error from the visiting team went in as the final point for UNE.
The hosts were up 9-8 in set two until seven of the next eight points went the way of the Fighting Scots. After UNE registered the next four points, Gordon responded with four of its own to make it 19-14. Kills from junior
Paige Curran (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Brunette sparked a 9-2 stretch that swung control of the set over to the Nor'easters (23-21). The next two points were split, before Brunette finished off the comeback with another winner.
UNE never trailed in the third frame, and led 16-12 before pulling away late. Brunette continued her fine play with the deciding blow in three of the last four points in the set.
Brunette finished the match with an impressive .765 attack percentage. Curran and first-year
Leah Janelle (Madbury, N.H.) combined for 12 kills in support, and Curran added three solo blocks. Sophomore
Maria Kuehl (Middleton, N.H.) and classmate
Ashley Thibodeau (Nashua, N.H.) recorded 14 and 10 assists, respectively, to help generate the offense. Defensively, sophomore
Kirsta Adie (Tyngsboro, Mass.) had 12 digs and senior
Abby Davis (Somersworth, N.H.) had seven.
For Gordon, senior Claudia Amado (Glastonbury, Conn.) notched a team-high six kills and sophomore Lauren Kranyak (Locust Grove, Va.) chipped in with five, to go with six digs. Senior setter Andrea Amado (Glastonbury, Conn.) finished with 13 assists, and junior libero Keri Hustus (Eastford, Conn.) compiled 12 digs.
The Nor'easters return to action Friday, with dates against Worcester State University (6 p.m.) and Wheaton College (8 p.m.) on the first day of play at the Crabtree Invitational, hosted by Eastern Connecticut State University.
Gordon is back at home Thursday, scheduled for a non-conference match against Suffolk University (7 p.m.).
