Palmer's golden goal propels Nor'easters past Gordon

First-year Margaret Palmer delivered a clutch goal to keep UNE unbeaten in CCC play

WENHAM, Mass. -- First-year midfielder Margaret Palmer (Scarborough, Maine) made the first goal of her collegiate career count as she provided the University of New England with a 2-1 double overtime victory over Gordon College in a Commonwealth Coast Conference women's soccer match played in soggy conditions on the turf at the Brigham Athletic Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

After controlling the ball at the top of the 18, Palmer drilled a high shot just under the crossbar with 4:08 elapsed in the final overtime period to improve the Nor'easters' record to 8-1-2 (4-0-1 CCC) and place them atop the conference standings with 13 points.

UNE tallied the lone goal of the opening frame when senior Alice Read (Auburn,  Maine) converted a cross from classmate Sarah Richardson (Rochester, N.H.) in the 27th minute.

The hosts drew even with 57:47 gone by on a goal by junior Karina Scavo (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) that was set-up by junior Caitlin Nedde (Colchester, Vt.). 

Senior goalkeeper Jess Woodworth (Concord, N.H.) was credited with four saves for the Nor'easters, who held advantages in shots (14-9) and corner kicks (7-5).

Sophomore Kari Christensen (Standish, Maine) stopped six shots on goal for Gordon (6-5, 3-1).

Big Blue will look to extend a six-game unbeaten string when Western New England comes to town for a noon start on Saturday.

The Fighting Scots host Salve Regina University that same day.
