UNE overcomes 3rd-set deficit to cap sweep of Lions

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sophomore Angie Brunette (North Andover, Mass.) blasted five kills during a 10-0 third-set run to help the University of New England wipe away an eight-point deficit and secure a 3-0 victory over Eastern Nazarene College in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's volleyball match played Wednesday evening at the Campus Center. Set scores were 25-13, 25-14, and 25-22.

The Nor'easters improve to 15-12 overall and 4-3 in league contests with their eighth straight win over the Lions, who drop to 10-17 on the year (2-6 CCC).

UNE jumped out to a 13-2 advantage early on en route to taking the first set, and after getting out to a 9-2 cushion in the second, needed the last eight points to pull away from a three-point (17-14) contest in the middle of the frame.

In the third, the visitors got four quick points behind a kill and two aces from sophomore Cayla Clinkscale (Winchendon, Mass.) to built a 17-11 lead, and extended the gap to eight (21-13) before succumbing to a string of nine kills in what would be the final 12 Big Blue scores.

First-year Leah Janelle (Madbury, N.H.) led all players with 10 kills, five service aces, and an attack percentage of .300. Brunette finished with nine winners, while senior Abby Davis (Somersworth, N.H.) and junior Paige Curran (Chelmsford, Mass.) added eight and seven kills, respectively. Curran also recorded a solo block and two block assists.

Sophomore Maria Kuehl (Middleton, N.H.) notched 29 assists and a match-best 15 digs for the Nor'easters, who conclude the regular-season with a home date against regionally-ranked conference front-runner, Roger Williams University, beginning on Saturday at 3 p.m.

For Eastern Nazarene, which takes to the court the same day for a non-conference match with Salem State University (1 p.m.), Clinkscale had four kills and three aces. First-year Kori Sorensen (Quincy, Mass.) tallied a team-high 11 digs.
