BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England men's soccer team got a goal in each half and fended off Endicott College late to take a 2-1 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) win on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
The victory snaps a seven-game losing streak for the Nor'easters, who improve to 3-10 overall and 2-6 in CCC play. The Gulls (7-7-3, 4-3-2 CCC) suffer their first loss in their last nine starts. UNE has now topped Endicott in three straight meetings between the teams, after managing just one tie in the previous 10 contests.
UNE established a 1-0 lead in the opening half when sophomore
Steve Contestabile (Rochester, N.Y.) headed a service from first-year
Anthony Frangione (Barnstead, N.H.) into the net in the 33rd minute.
Big Blue added what would prove to be a critical insurance goal in the 61st minute as senior
Kiel Hiller (Galloway, N.J.) found sophomore
Kyle McGlone (Peabody, Mass.), who directed a high shot just under the crossbar.
The visiting Gulls would apply pressure late, finally breaking through with 1:01 remaining when first-year Ben Streib (Ellington, Conn.) rocketed a shot into the top left-hand corner of the goal to cut the deficit in half.
Endicott was unable to notch the equalizer before time expired, however.
First-year goalkeeper
Aidan McParland (Brockville, Ontario) stopped two shots for UNE, which controls its own playoff destiny Tuesday when the Nor'easters host Eastern Nazarene College at 6:30 p.m. A UNE win will propel Big Blue into the CCC Championship, which begins next Saturday.
Rookie netminder Aaron Kanter (Medfield, Mass.) came up with three saves for the Gulls. Endicott concludes its regular season Wednesday with a 3 p.m. road match at Framingham State University.
