UNE battles for five sets to down Colby; 6th straight win

Maria Kuehl dialed up 40 assists to go with 15 digs as Big Blue continued its win streak

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The University of New England women's volleyball team went to a fifth set for just the second time this season and came out on top once again, picking up a 3-2 victory over Colby College in a non-conference match played Wednesday evening at Wadsworth Gymnasium. Set scores were 25-22, 8-25, 25-15, 22-25, and 15-5.

The win was the sixth in-a-row for the Nor'easters, who now stand at 13-11 overall. With their fifth setback in as many outings, the Mules fall to 7-12 on the season.

Junior Paige Curran (Chelmsford, Mass.) posted 17 kills and seven solo blocks to lead UNE, which received an additional 11 kills and three solo blocks from sophomore Angie Brunette (North Andover, Mass.). First-year Leah Janelle (Madbury, N.H.) put forth a solid, all-around effort, finishing with eight kills, 15 digs, three aces, and three blocks, and senior Abby Davis (Somersworth, N.H.) chipped in with 10 kills and 17 digs.

Sophomore Maria Kuehl (Middleton, N.H.) helped guide the attack with 40 assists, to go along with 15 digs and nine kills. Defensively, the Nor'easters got 31 digs from sophomore Kirsta Adie (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and 14 more from junior Jackie Stone (Saginaw, Mich.).

Big Blue takes to Plymouth State University on Saturday for a pair of matches. UNE will face Eastern Connecticut State University at 1:30 p.m., and then the host Panthers at 3 p.m.
