MIDDLETOWN, R.I. -- First-year
Marlie Mochamer (Farmington, Maine) put back a rebound late in the first half to provide the University of New England with enough to remain unbeaten (6-0-1) in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action, defeating Salve Regina University, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Gaudet Field.
Mochamer's third tally of the season came with 49 seconds left in the opening period, following a save on a shot by classmate
Nicolette Caron (Scarborough, Maine).
The win was the fifth straight over the Seahawks in the all-time series for the Nor'easters (10-2-2), who received five saves from senior
Jess Woodworth (Concord, N.H.), including a pair of key stops in the final 45 minutes on SRU junior Kaitlyn Birrell (Hope, R.I.). Woodworth's shutout was her sixth of the year, and UNE has now posted a clean sheet in nine of its 14 games.
Salve drops to 10-4-1 overall, and 5-1-1 in league contests. Sophomore Jessica Lane (Marshfield, Mass.) made four saves for the hosts, who despite coming up on the wrong side of a 16-10 shot margin, finished the match with an 8-2 edge in corners.
Big Blue returns home for its final two dates of the regular-season -- the first taking place on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) against Eastern Nazarene College.
The Seahawks are back at it on Tuesday, as Roger Williams University visits for a showdown between the second and third place teams in the CCC standings.
