UNE battles back in third set to finish sweep of Mariners

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Leading by two sets but down 15-11 and 21-19 in the third, the University of New England pulled out a 25-23 win in the frame to close out a 3-0 victory against Maine Maritime Academy in non-conference women's volleyball action Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center. Sets one and two went to UNE by scores of 25-17 and 25-15.

Victorious in nine of their last 11 matches, the Nor'easters even their overall mark on the season at 11-11. The Mariners (17-4) fall for just the fourth time in 21 outings this year.

Senior Abby Davis (Somersworth, N.H.) posted a double-double to help guide Big Blue, registering 11 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Angie Brunette (North Andover, Mass.) also had 11 kills, as well as a team-best .350 attack percentage. First-year Leah Janelle (Madbury, N.H.) put up nine kills to go with five service aces in support.

Sophomores Maria Kuehl (Middleton, N.H.) and Ashley Thibodeau (Nashua, N.H.) combined for 33 assists (19 and 14) to help set up the offense, and 25 digs (15-10) on the defensive side of things.

For Maine Maritime, sophomore Melissa Lail (Elisabeth, Colo.) tallied a team-high seven kills, and was one of two players to record 12 digs, along with senior KC Anderson (Franklin, Maine). Sophomore Chantal Adderley (Nassau, Bahamas) had a hand in match-best four block assists.

UNE is back in action Tuesday at Saint Joseph's College (Maine), while the Mariners visit Husson University for a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) contest on Wednesday.
