BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior Celeste Swain (Berkeley, Calif.) tipped in a cross from classmate Ellery Gould (East Sandwich, Mass.) with just over 13 minutes remaining to lift Bowdoin College to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over the University of New England in non-conference women's soccer action Tuesday evening at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

The Polar Bears move to 4-3-3 on the season, while the loss snaps Big Blue's seven-game unbeaten streak, and leaves the Nor'easters at 9-2-2 overall.

Gould leveled the contest at 2-2 in the 52nd minute, redirecting a shot off the foot of first-year Amanda Kinneston (Shelburne, Vt.). Bowdoin continued to apply heavy pressure for the ensuing 25 minutes before Swain broke through with what would prove to be the game-winner. In the second half, the visitors posted a 12-3 advantage in shots.

Bowdoin jumped in front a mere 2:47 into the game, when Gould sent a pass through the middle to the right side that was collected by sophomore Molly Popolizio (Rexford, N.Y.), who then turned and lofted in a shot into the left corner.

A hand ball in the box at the 15:10 mark gave UNE its first shot attempt of the match, and senior Alice Read (Auburn, Maine) stepped up to convert it and tie things up, ripping a shot off the goalie's fingertips just below the crossbar.

Read notched her second of the night in the 42nd minute to put the Nor'easters ahead, 2-1. Classmate Katie Caron (Winslow, Maine) found open space on the left and made a cross to Read, who slowed up her run to punch a low shot through the defense in front.

The Polar Bears had a chance to get one back heading into the break, but the shot from first-year Alex Yurick (New York, N.Y.) in the final seconds of the frame caromed off the crossbar.

Sophomore Maddie Lane (Topsham, Maine) got the win in goal for Bowdoin, which finished the game with a 19-7 cushion in shots. The Polar Bears resume NESCAC play on Saturday with a home date against Hamilton College (12:30 p.m.).

UNE, which received six saves from senior Jess Woodworth (Concord, N.H.), is back in action the same day with a visit to CCC-foe Salve Regina University (1 p.m.).
