NEWPORT, R.I. - Senior Julianne Barry (Randolph, Mass.) and first-year Jennifer Duggan (Merrimack, N.H.) each recorded 10 kills to help lead the Salve Regina University women's volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over the University of New England during a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup Saturday afternoon at the Rodgers Recreation Center. Set scores 25-21, 16-25, 25-23, and 25-22.
With the win, the Seahawks improve to 8-6 overall and remain a perfect 4-0 in CCC play. The loss drops the Nor'easters to 4-10 on the season, including a 1-3 conference mark.
The Seahawks led 12-7 in the opening set before surviving a 9-1 run from UNE to finish it off with a 9-3 stretch. The second set was all Big Blue, which led from start-to-finish and was up by as many as 11. Set three was tightly contested throughout, until Salve recorded seven of the last eight points to come-from-behind to gain the advantage. While the hosts never trailed in the final set, UNE battled back from a six-point deficit to within two during the closing moments.
For SRU, sophomore Clare Adams (New Concord, Ohio) had a five aces to go along with seven kills in support, while first-year Taylor Violet (Tiverton, R.I.) fueled the attack with 31 assists. Junior Megan Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass.) led all players with 25 digs on the day, and Barry added a 4.5 blocks.
The Nor'easters were paced by junior
Paige Curran (Chelmsford, Mass.) who had a match-best 17 kills to go with four blocks. Sophomore
Angie Brunette (North Andover, Mass.) also had a solid performance, recording 11 kills and 2.5 blocks, while classmate
Maria Kuehl (Middletown, N.H.) compiled a contest-high 39 assists and was tops on the team with 20 digs. Senior
Abby Davis (Somersworth, N.H.) and sophomore
Kirsta Adie (Tyngsboro, Mass.) combined for 35 digs between the two of them.
