Nichols edges UNE to level record in conference play

Box Score

DUDLEY, Mass. -- Junior Scott Coderre (Thompson, Conn.) headed in what would be the game-winner in the 68th minute as Nichols College topped the University of New England, 2-1, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's soccer contest Saturday afternoon at Vendetti Field.

Last year's conference champions improve to 6-3-1 on the year, and now stand at 2-2-1 in CCC games. The setback is the fourth in-a-row for UNE (2-7-0, 1-3-0 CCC).

Sophmore Pat Gaumond (Holden, Mass.) put the hosts on the scoreboard first when he deposited a feed from classmate Brendan Whitson (Auburn, Mass.) at the 14:20 mark.

The Nor'easters netted the equalizer in the 32nd minute off a header in front from first-year Zack Bunnell (Amesbury, Mass.). The score remained 1-1 at the half, as the Bison held slight 6-5 edge on shots and 3-1 advantage on corner kicks after 45 minutes.

Coderre's goal at 67:39 was his seventh of the season, and marked the second assist of the day for Whitson, who inserted the pass on a corner kick.

UNE had an opportunity to tie in the 87th minute, but a header off a free kick sailed just wide.

The Bison, who out-shot their opponents 19-7 for the match, received three stops from Brendan Hamilton. Nichols is scheduled for a non-conference game at Daniel Webster College on Tuesday.

First-year goalie Aidan McParland (Brockville, Ontario) finished with nine saves for the Nor'easters, who visits Gordon College on Wednesday for a CCC contest beginning at 3 p.m.
