Big Blue swims past Colby-Sawyer with ease, 175-80

NEW LONDON, N.H. -- University of New England women's swimmers Lizzie Wareham (Osterville, Mass.) and Alex Gabriels (East Greenbush, N.Y.) each won a pair of events as the Nor'easters defeated Colby-Sawyer College, 175-80, on Saturday afternoon.

Wareham claimed the 200-yard freestyle (2:09.26) and 100-yard butterfly (1:06.12), while Gabriels was victorious in the 50 free (27.61) and 200-yard individual medley (2:26.40).

Chargers first-year Erin Dunican (Bennington, Vt.) won a meet-high three events on the day, in the form of the 50- and 100-yard breaststroke races, as well as the 50 fly. Dunican's time of 1:12.08 in the 100 breaststroke set a new school and pool record.

For UNE (7-2), junior Jessica Sweeney (Hampton, N.H.), sophomore Meaghan Arsenault (Methuen, Mass.), junior Allie Travnik (New Lenox, Ill.), and first-year Alexa Cheney (Mansfield, Conn.) took one event each, and the Nor'easters had first-place finishes in both relay races. Cheney also came up just short (33.11) of Colby-Sawyer junior Morgan Parker's (Keene, N.H.) 32.93 in the 50-yard backstroke.

Big Blue is now off until February 18, when it will compete at the three-day New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships at the Upper Valley Aquatics Center in White River Junction, Vt.
