Jason Marks (East Lyme, Conn.) and sophomore
Kevin Tarr (Hermon, Maine) each scored a goal as the University of New England picked up its first win of the season Wednesday afternoon, defeating the University of Southern Maine, 2-0, in non-conference men's soccer action from Barbara J. Hazard Field.
The Nor'easters evened their record at 1-1-1 with the victory, giving
Matt Gnall his first collegiate coaching win. The Huskies suffered their third setback to start the season, dropping to 0-3 overall.
In the 32nd minute, two one-touch passes from junior
Kiel Hiller (Galloway, N.J.) and
Cody Lapointe (Pownal, Maine) set up a fast-breaking Marks, who held off a defender while ripping a shot past the on-rushing goalkeeper to put UNE in front for good.
Tarr gave Big Blue an insurance goal in the 79th minute, collecting a pass from junior
Dan Crear (North Attleboro, Mass.) and lofting a shot up over the USM netminder.
Senior
Jon Planer (Yarmouth, Maine) posted five saves for the Nor'easters, who entertain Salve Regina University in the TCCC opener Saturday (2:30 p.m.).
For Southern Maine, which travels to Worcester State University Saturday (2:30 p.m.), senior David Kreps (Agawam, Mass.) made four stops.
