Mariners score one in each half to blank Nor'easters

Maine Maritime opened its 2010 season by notching a goal in each half for a 2-0 victory

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Junior Nate Tipton (West Chester, Pa.) and senior Daniel Hassett (Falmouth, Maine) each recorded goals for Maine Maritime Academy in a 2-0 shutout of the University of New England in non-conference men's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

The contest was the first of the season for the Mariners (1-0-0), who topped the Nor'easters (0-1-1) for the second straight year.

Tipton got the visitors on the board in the 16th minute, collecting a pass on the right side from classmate Jakub Rucinski (Portland, Maine) and slipping the ball off the left post past the diving UNE keeper.

Big Blue out-shot their opponents 8-4 in the frame, and held a 6-1 edge in corners, but still trailed at intermission.

In the 69th minute, Hassett took a corner kick from sophomore Ben Russell (Farmington, Maine) off the the first bounce and headed it just below the crossbar to double the Maine Maritime advantage to 2-0.

The Mariners controlled play the rest of the way, finishing the second half with a 12-3 cushion in shots and up 8-3 in corners.

Senior Jeff Butland (Cumberland, Maine) made four stops in goal to earn the shutout, while his counterpart, senior Jon Planer (Yarmouth, Maine), registered three saves.

Maine Maritime returns home Sunday for a conference tilt against UMaine Farmington. The Nor'easters continue their homestand Wednesday (4:30 p.m.) when the University of Southern Maine comes to Biddeford.
