Nor'easters storm past USM for season-opening victory

Sophomore middle Paige Curran helped lead UNE to a convincing 3-0 win Friday

GORHAM, Maine - The University of New England volleyball team got its season underway by registering a sizzling .449 attack percentage in a 3-0 (25-7, 25-14, 25-14) victory over host University of Southern Maine in the opening match of the 2010 USM Invitational at Warren Hill Gymnasium Friday evening.

Sophomore middle hitter Paige Curran (Chelmsford, Mass.) was dominant at the net for the Nor'easters, totaling six kills and four solo blocks while contributing four aces at the service line.

First-year setter Nicole Kalinowski (Tucson, Ariz.) offered a strong performance in her first collegiate match with nine assists, three kills and four aces. Senior outside hitter Kristen Edwards (Laconia, N.H.) chipped in six kills for the Nor'easters, who had just eight errors in 87 total attacks.

Junior outside hitter Kayla Cotsis led the Huskies with three kills, while senior Danielle Netland (Cumberland, Maine) added a pair.

Both teams return to action tomorrow. UNE (1-0) will take on Maine Maritime Academy at noon and Salem State University at 4 p.m.. The Huskies (0-2) start play with Salem State at 10 a.m. and wrap up the event when they face Maine Maritime at 6 p.m.
