Kolb's five-point day pushes Pilgrims past Nor'easters

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sophomore forward Aaron Kolb (New Durham, N.H.) tallied two goals and added an assist as New England College came back from an early deficit to defeat the University of New England, 3-1, in The Commonwealth Coast Conference men's soccer action Wednesday afternoon at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

With their third win in-a-row, the Pilgrims improve to 6-4 overall (3-2 TCCC). The loss ends the Nor'easters' (3-3-3, 1-2-2 TCCC) unbeaten streak at four.

UNE struck first in the 19th minute, when junior Dan Crear (North Attleboro, Mass.) led classmate Owen Evans (West Stockbridge, Mass.) down the left side and the forward pushed the ball just inside the far post.

Kolb inserted a corner kick eight minutes later that junior back James Kiriakos (Needham, Mass.) headed in off the crossbar from six yards out, tying things up at 1-1.

The match went into the half with the teams still even, despite NEC holding a 13-3 advantage in shots.

Less than three minutes into the second frame, Kolb put the visitors in front. After drawing the UNE goalie away from the net down the right side along the end line, sophomore Paul McLean (East Hartford, Conn.) sent a cross in front which Kolb collected and hit into the open goal.

Kolb later sealed the win with a successful penalty kick in the 83rd minute.

Junior Pat Harkin (Scituate, R.I.) made two stops between the pipes for the Pilgrims, who return home to face Roger Williams University on Saturday.

For UNE, which visits Western New England College the same day (11 a.m.), senior Jon Planer (Yarmouth, Maine) made eight saves.
