Kristin Meza (San Diego, Calif.) converted a penalty kick attempt in the 61st minute to give the University of New England Nor'easters a 1-0 victory over the Gordon College Fighting Scots a The Commonwealth Coast Conference women's soccer match Saturday afternoon at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
The win improved the Nor'easters' overall mark to 6-2, 3-1 in TCCC play. Gordon fell to 6-3 overall, 2-2 in conference action.
Meza slid the penalty kick inside the right goal post after UNE first-year
Ellie Arsenault (Saco, Maine) was tripped dribbling to goal inside the box.
The Nor'easters defense would make the lead stand up the rest of the way, limiting the visitors to just three shots after halftime.
Gordon took advantage of a prevailing wind to control play for much of the first frame, out-shooting UNE 9-4 and establishing a 4-1 margin in corner kicks.
Junior goalkeeper
Jess Woodworth (Concord, N.H.) made seven saves for UNE to register her third shutout and lower her goals against average to 0.66.
First-year netminder Kari Christensen (Standish, Maine) turned away four shots on goal for Gordon, which suffered its third setback in its last four outings.
The Nor'easters return to action Wednesday when they host New England College in a TCCC clash kicking off at 6:30 p.m. Gordon entertains Wentworth Institute of Technology that same day at 3:30 p.m.
