UNE powers past Anna Maria to improve to 2-1 in TCCC

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior outside hitter Kristen Edwards (Laconia, N.H.) won 14 points with nine kills and five service aces to lead the University of New England to a 3-0 sweep of Anna Maria College in The Commonwealth Coast Conference women's volleyball play Tuesday evening at the Campus Center.

With the win, the Nor'easters improved to 12-0 all-time versus the AMCATS. UNE stands at 6-5 overall on the season, 2-1 in TCCC play. Anna Maria is 5-6 overall and winless in three conference matches.

The Nor'easters were never threatened in the match, winning the sets by scores of 25-8, 25-14, 25-14.

Edwards' five aces were a career high, as were her eight defensive digs. The 5'11" tri-captain hit at a .500 clip on her 14 attack attempts. Overall, UNE mustered a blistering .375 attack percentage for the match.

Sophomore Lindsey Cashell (Merrimack, N.H.) chipped in nine kills with zero errors for the Nor'easters. First-year setter Maria Kuehl (Middleton, N.H.) fueled the offense with 30 assists. Classmate Nicole Kalinowski (Tucson, Ariz.) continued her strong jump-serving with four aces and 100 percent accuracy on 13 attempts.

Defensively, first-year libero Kirsta Adie (Tyngsboro, Mass.) had eight digs and was 14-for-14 on serves received.

Sophomore Sandy Acosta (Lawrence, Mass.) led Anna Maria with six kills and three total blocks. Junior Marie Barral (Worcester, Mass.) contributed a team-best seven digs.

Both teams return to the court Saturday. The Nor'easters head to UMaine Farmington for a tri-match with the Beavers and UMaine Presque Isle (noon start). The AMCATS host Framinghan State University and UMaine Fort Kent for a tri-match beginning at 11 a.m.
