UNE fought back late in set number one to key a 3-1 non-league win over St. Joe's

STANDISH, Maine -- The University of New England Nor'easters rallied from a 21-18 deficit in the first set for a 28-26 win, propelling them to a 3-1 non-conference women's volleyball victory over host St. Joseph's College Thursday evening at the Harold Alfond Center.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Nor'easters (4-4) and marked the 20th consecutive victory for UNE in meetings between the two teams. The loss puts the Monks at 7-3 overall.
Sophomore
Paige Curran (Chelmsford, Mass.) continued her early-season dominance on the UNE front line, drilling 10 kills and coming up with six total blocks. Classmate
Lindsey Cashell (Merrimack, N.H.) contributed seven kills, while senior
Kristen Edwards (Laconia, N.H.) added six.
First-year setter
Maria Kuehl (Middleton, N.H.) posted a double-double for the Nor'easters with 28 assists and 14 digs. Defensively, Big Blue also received solid performances from
Kirsta Adie (Tyngsboro, Mass.), who had a match-best 17 digs, as well as junior
Abby Davis (Somersworth, N.H.) and sophomore
Jackie Stone (Saginaw, Mich.), who combined for 25.
Sophomore setter Kiah Begley (Berwick, Maine) played a strong match for the Monks, racking up 33 assists while digging out 13 balls. Classmate Sarah Hawkes (Pownal, Maine) had nine kills, four blocks and 16 digs in a losing effort.
UNE opens up The Commonwealth Coast Conference play this Saturday when it hosts Endicott College and Regis College for a tri-match. Big Blue takes on Endicott at 11 a.m. to kick off the day's action. Both of the Nor'easters' matches may be seen
