Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Junior Alice Read (Auburn, Maine) and first-year Ellie Arsenault (Saco, Maine) scored first-half goals, and the University of New England held off Salve Regina University for a 2-1 victory in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference mutual-opener Saturday afternoon at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

The Nor'easters improve to 3-0 on the young season (1-0 TCCC), while the Seahawks slip to 1-3 overall (0-1).

Read scored in the 12th minute when junior Katie Caron (Winslow, Maine) found her streaking up the right side. Read collected Caron's pass, took two touches and deposited a high shot just under the crossbar to give UNE a 1-0 advantage.

Arsenault would tally the eventual game-winner five minutes later off a cross from first-year Morgan Jensen (New Hartford, Conn.). Arsenault one-timed the service from the right flank into the back of the net.

The Seahawks cut their deficit to 2-1 just before the close of the half on a UNE own-goal when a Nor'easter back inadvertently headed a Salve Regina cross directly into the goal.

After each team mustered five shots apiece in the opening frame, UNE held an 8-3 advantage in the final stanza, but neither team would capatilize on their chances.

Junior goalkeeper Jess Woodworth (Concord, N.H.) made three saves, while Seahawk first-year netminder Jacqueline McPherson (Mansfield, Mass.) stopped six UNE attempts.

The Nor'easters will look to extend their early-season win streak to four Tuesday when they head to Waterville for a 4 p.m. match with non-conference foe Colby College.

Salve Regina plays a road game Monday at Wesleyan University (4:30 p.m.).
