Salve Regina drops UNE in conference opener, 5-0

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior Ken Johnson (Colonia, N.J.) notched a pair of goals to lead Salve Regina University to a 5-0 victory over the University of New England in The Commonwealth Coast Conference men's soccer opener Satuday afternoon at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

Winners of two in-a-row, the Seahawks even their record at 2-2 overall (1-0 TCCC). The Nor'easters fall to 1-2-1 overall (0-1 TCCC) with the loss.

Juniors Sean McAllister (North Arlington, N.J.) and Christopher Knoth (East Islip, N.Y.) each added a goal and an assist for Salve, which defeated UNE for the ninth time in the last 10 meetings between the teams.

Johnson kicked off the scored in the 11th minute, collecting a pass from McAllister with his back to the goal just outside the 6-yard box and firing a hard turn-around shot into the lower right corner.

The visitors doubled the margin in the 41st minute, when sophomore Bobby Ernst (Needham, Mass.) headed home a bending Ian Jentgen (Columbus, Ohio) free kick from about 25 yards out.

Salve would find the back of the net three more times in the second half, and finished with a 16-5 advantage in shots.

Sophomore Devin O'Gorman (Canton, Mass.) did not face a shot on goal in over 83 minutes of work before giving way to first-year Adam Boyette (Galloway, N.J.), who closed the contest out.

Senior Jon Planer (Yarmouth, Maine) and first-year Matthew Cantu (Brunswick, Maine) each recorded a save for UNE, which concludes its five-game homestand against Mount Ida College on Tuesday (7 p.m.)

The Seahawks return to action Wednesday at home against Suffolk University (4 p.m.).
