BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Junior midfielder
Owen Evans (West Stockbridge, Mass.) converted a rebound early in the second half to help the University of New England rally for a 2-2 draw with Thomas College in non-conference men's soccer action Wednesday evening at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
The Nor'easters got on the scoreboard in the 15th minute when senior midfielder
Cody Lapointe (Pownal, Maine) drove home a penalty kick after Thomas was assessed a foul in the box. Lapointe directed a low shot into the back of the net for his second career tally.
Thomas responded just over two minutes later on a set piece. First-year midfielder Danny Plumbe (England) lifted a shot from 35 yards out that deflected off UNE senior keeper
Jon Planer (Yarmouth, Maine) and across the goal line.
The Terriers made the score 2-1 in the 20th minute off a corner kick. First-year back Paul Rechichi (Australia) picked up a service from classmate Casey Castle (Bermuda) and deposited it in the back of the net to give the visitors the lead.
UNE drew even in the 53rd minute after junior midfielder
Dan Crear (North Attleboro, Mass.) was stopped on a point-blank bid by first-year Thomas netminder Mikkail Crockwell (Bermuda). Evans collected the deflection and scored the final tally of the match.
The Nor'easters outshot Thomas 3-2 during the two 10-minute overtime periods, but neither team was able to convert.
Planer finished with nine saves for the Nor'easters, who trailed in shots by a 19-12 margin. Crockwell had four stops for Thomas.
Both teams return to action Saturday (Sep. 4). UNE hosts Maine Maritime Academy at 2:30 p.m., while the Terriers take on Westfield State University at 2:15 p.m.
