BEVERLY, Mass. -- Sophomore Sarah Lempicki (Plantsville, Conn.) surrendered just one hit and struck out nine as Western New England College advanced into 2010 The Commonwealth Coast Conference Softball Championship and eliminated the University of New England from tournament play with a 6-1 win Saturday morning.
The one-loss Golden Bears (26-18-1) move on to face top-seeded and unbeaten Endicott College in the championship round at 12 p.m. The Nor'easters end their season at 25-14 overall.
Lempicki, who upped her record to 9-3 with the victory, recorded a pair of hits and two RBI in the game to help the offense. Junior Trish Breault (Millville, Mass.) also drove in a pair, while going 3-for-4 at the plate.
Senior Lauren Arsenault (Fitchburg, Mass.), junior Elyse Gauvin (Swansea, Mass.), and sophomore Sara Barnes (Berkley, Mass.) all notched two hits, as WNEC pounded out 13 base hits.
The Golden Bears put a five-spot on the board in the top of the third to assume control. After two outs to start the inning, Gauvin and Arsenault reached with back-to-back singles. Breault knocked both in with a double to the gap in right center, and, following four more singles, the lead was 5-0.
UNE's lone hit of the day came in the bottom of the inning, when senior
Julie Monteiro (Portsmouth, R.I.) launched the first home run of her career over the fence in left.
In the sixth, Lempicki drove in Gauvin with a double to right-center to complete the scoring.
