BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sophomore Marie Mantelli (Thompson, Conn.) singled through the left side in the bottom of the eighth inning to score classmate Ashley Gott (Winterport, Maine) from third and give the University of New England a 5-4 come-from-behind victory in game two to complete the sweep of New England College in The Commonwealth Coast Conference softball action Tuesday afternoon at Claude Dubois Field.

The Nor'easters needed eight innings in game one as well, picking up a 4-3 win when senior Julie Monteiro (Portsmouth, R.I.) singled down the left field line to drive in first-year Erin Grover (Biddeford, Maine).

Gott recorded her third hit of the nightcap with a lead-off triple in the bottom of the eighth to level the score in at 4-all, scoring pinch runner Liz Kelly (Hollis, N.H.) who had been placed on second.

The Pilgrims grabbed the lead in the top of the eighth when first-year Gabrielle Timms (Clark Summit, Pa.) doubled home junior Melinda Robbins (Oxford, Mass.).

The contest was scoreless until the fifth inning, when both teams put three runs on the board. With two out in the top of the stanza, NEC junior Rachel White (Arlington, Mass.) rolled a single up the middle that scored classmate Bethany Forshaw (Watertown, Conn.) and sophomore Chelsea Torrico (Mt. Washington, Mass.). Robbins followed with base hit to center, plating White.

After two outs and two walks to begin the bottom of the fifth, UNE senior Angie Damon (Scarborough, Maine) ripped a double into the gap in right center to make the deficit one (3-2). Damon moved to third on an errant throw to home, and scored as Gott hustled down the line for an infield single on the next play.

In the opener, NEC struck first with a pair of runs in the first half of the third. With runners on first and second and two out, Robbins laced a double to right center to score one. First-year Alyssa Hoot (Waterville, Ohio) followed with the first of her two hits to double the advantage (2-0).

The Nor'easters made it 2-1 in the bottom of the inning, only to see the lead restored to two in the fourth after a Timms RBI double.

Trailing 3-2 entering their last at-bats of regulation, UNE first-year Brittany Creamer (Lyman, Maine) blasted a double to center to drive in Gott from second and tie things up.

Monteiro and sophomore Maegen Johnson (Standish, Maine) had two hits apiece in game one, while junior Amber Zablowsky (Rochester, Mass.) shut the visitors down over the final four innings to finish with seven punch-outs and the win.

Damon had three hits and three RBI on the day for the Nor'easters (14-4, 9-1 TCCC), who extended their win streak against the Pilgrims to seven games.

Timms finished the day with five hits to lead NEC (2-14, 1-5 TCCC), while Robbins added four base-knocks.

For UNE, which hosts the University of Southern Maine for a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday (3:30 p.m.), sophomore Erin Lyons (Salem, N.H.) struck out eight to earn the game-two victory.

The Pilgrims travel to Curry College Thursday for a TCCC twinbill (3 p.m.).
