Box Score
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sophomore goalie
Nate Porter (Cohasset, Mass.) posted 16 saves to help the University of New England pick up an 11-1 The Commonwealth Coast Conference men's lacrosse victory over Nichols College Saturday afternoon at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
With the win, the Nor'easters move into a three-way tie for eighth in the league standings at 2-8 -- even with the Bison and Wentworth Institute of Technology.
As none of the first four tie-breakers separate one team apart from the other two, the conference office will conduct a coin flip to determine the final playoff team on Monday at 1 p.m.
Porter held Nichols scoreless into the fourth period, surrendering a goal to Bison sophomore Michael Farragher (Worcester, Mass.) with 11:02 to play.
UNE got on the board just 13 seconds into the match, when graduate student
Eric Santos (Jamestown, R.I.) won the face-off and rifled home a shot, and never looked back. Santos added another score in the final period, and won 6-of-9 face-offs for the game.
The Nor'easters also got two goals and two assists each from junior
Michael Woods (Kittery Point, Maine) and first-year
Tyler Thomas (Pleasantville, N.Y.). Sophomore
Dylan Thomas (Pleasantville, N.Y.) added a goal and two helpers.
Nichols (5-10) received 16 saves from sophomore goalie Scott Gray (Annapolis, Md.).
UNE (6-10), which matched its program-best win total from a year ago, out-shot the Bison by a 49-26 margin.
For the team that advances to the TCCC tournament via the coin flip, the quarterfinal round match against top seed Endicott College will take place next Saturday (May 1).
