NEWPORT, R.I. - The Salve Regina University softball team swept a doubleheader from the University of New England in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) action Sunday afternoon at Toppa Field. The Seahawks won game one, 1-0, in eight innings before taking game two, 4-1.
The two teams played a scoreless seven innings in the opener before the Seahawks (11-9, 6-6 TCCC) pushed across a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to get the win. First-year Deanna Ciccarelli (Paramus, N.J.) was placed on second base to start the frame, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Following a walk, junior Christina Walsh (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) laced a grounder to first base that was misplayed, and Ciccarelli came in to score the winning run.
Senior Sarah Jakiela (Meriden, Conn.) fanned six to earn the victory for Salve, while her counterpart, junior Amber Zablowsky (Rochester, Mass.), gave up four hits in just her second losing effort of the season (9-2).
In game two, first-year Jillian Quintana (Denver, Colo.) went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Seahawks, while classmate Jen Cruver (North Haven, Conn.) had two hits and a pair of RBI. Jakiela pitched another solid game for Salve, surrendering no earned runs and three hits while striking out five.
Cruver got the scoring started in the last half of the second, with an RBI single to left-center, and the hosts led, 1-0.
UNE senior Julie Monteiro (Portsmouth, R.I.) picked up her second hit of the day in the fourth, driving in a one run to tie things up. The Seahawks regained the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth with a run, and added one more in each of the next two innings to provide the final margin.
Sophomore Erin Lyons (Salem, N.H.) allowed one earned run and struck out three for the Nor'easters (17-7, 11-3 TCCC), who play a non-conference doubleheader with Bowdoin College in Biddeford on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.).
